I loved this book! Wicked Beginnings by LA Cotton! (Giveaway!)

Wicked Beginnings (Wicked Bay #1)
BY L A COTTON
The first book in a brand new YA/NA crossover series from the author who brought you Chastity Falls
Lo thought moving to Wicked Bay was the worst of her problems, but as life begins to unravel around her, she’s going to find out it’s only the beginning…

*** BONUS SCENE ***

“Oh my God.” Lo’s face paled
as her eyes swept over my bloody and bruised face. I knew I looked a mess,
hell, I felt it. Pain radiated through me. Burned in my bones. “What did you
do?” Her bottom lip quivered.

“You should see
the other guy.” I forced a smirk. Now I was standing here, I wasn’t sure what
the fuck to do … or say. I left the warehouse and drove straight home. But
before I could stop myself, I was outside the pool house.

“Maverick.”

Christ, my name on
her lips was like salve to every tender spot—and there was a lot. But I
could see the hesitation in her eyes. The confusion. And I didn’t blame her.
I’d barely looked at her since we kissed, let alone talk to her.

My eyes flickered
past her, to the pile of cardboard propped by the door. “When do you leave?”
The words stuck in my throat and Lo shrugged, her gaze still fixed on my face.

“Dad thinks it’ll
be the end of next week.”

A week and she’d
be gone.

Why did the idea
hurt so fucking much?

“You should let me
look at that.” She motioned to my face, and I moved inside and perched on one
of the stools, my body crashing fast.

It was always the
same. After a fight, I felt high on the adrenaline coursing through my veins.
But it never last long.

She gave me a
small nod and disappeared into the bathroom at the back of the pool house. When
Lo returned, she froze, the small first aid kit clutched in her hands. But that
wasn’t what caught my attention. It was the thin t-shirt covering her body,
barely hiding long toned legs. I hadn’t noticed before, too surprised that she
opened the door. But now I noticed.

And now I
couldn’t. Stop. Staring.

Fuck, she was
something else.

I’d tried to
ignore her. Tried real fucking hard. But she was everywhere. In the hallway at
school. In the house. Across the yard.

When I realized
she wasn’t going to move, I said, “Got any pain meds in there?”

Lo nodded,
retrieving some tablets she handed me a glass of water. Our fingers brushed and
a bolt of lightning shot through my chest. What the fuck was that? My eyes
widened, focused on where our hands joined, then slowly I lifted my face to hers.

Did she feel it
too?

The pull?

The flow of energy
between us?

It was like no
matter how hard I tried to stay away, external forces were determined to push
us back together.

“Thank you,” I
said breaking the awkward-as-shit silence, and Lo blinked with a tiny shake of
her head,

“This will
probably sting.” She pulled a couple of wipes free and moved closer.

“I’ve felt worse.”

Steadying herself,
hand on my shoulder, Lo studied my face and then started cleaning the cuts.
Slow and steady, pressed close to me. I could feel her. Every touch. Every
breath. The pain was still there but so was something else. Something I hadn’t
felt since that night on the beach.

“Fuck,” I hissed as
she moved over my cheekbone. The guy I fought tonight had got in a good
couple of right hooks. But I welcomed the pain. It dulled out all the other
shit.

“Sorry,” she
whispered, easing off the pressure. “Why, Maverick? Why do you do this to
yourself?”

My spine went
rigid. “Don’t.”

“This one probably
needs stitches.” Lo changed the subject and I relaxed a fraction, adding, “No
doctors, I’ll live.”

“Maverick…”

Without thinking,
I smoothed my hand over the curve of her hip and around her waist, dragging Lo
between my knees. But she pressed her hand against my shoulder. “Stop.”

I pulled back
slightly forcing her to look at me. Questioning her with my eyes. Didn’t she
realize I needed this—needed her?

“What are you
doing, Maverick?”

“Don’t you ever
just want to forget?” I’d asked her the same thing that night last summer. Did
she remember? Did she think about that night as much as I did?

She stared at me,
wide-eyed and lips parted slightly, as if she couldn’t understand.

“Lo,” it came out
barely a whisper. I sounded like a pussy. But I was tired. So fucking tired. Of
pretending. Of trying to ignore her. Of all the bullshit with my father. I just
wanted one night of freedom. One night where I could breathe.

Lo ignored me,
continuing to clean my face. When the last band aid was applied, her fingers
lingered over my eyebrow and then she was pulling away, letting cool air
replace her warmth. But I caught her wrist. “Look at me, London.”

“I should—”

“You should what?”

“Go, I should go.”

She tried to move but
I tugged her closer, opening my legs wider until she was nestled between them.

“Maverick, stop.”

I raised an
eyebrow, studying her. She said one thing, but the flush of her cheeks, the
quickened rise and fall of her chest suggested another. I leaned in closer, my
mouth ghosting over her shoulder. “You’re saying one thing, but your body is
saying another.” My fingers slid to the hem of her t-shirt and I twisted the
material dragging her closer, brushing my knuckles over her thighs.

Lo’s breath
faltered but she managed to stutter, “What about Caitlin?”

“She’s no one to
me,” I ground out, annoyed she’d brought her up. This was our moment. One
perfect untainted moment. It was more than I deserved but I was selfish bastard
and I wanted it.

All of it. Every
undeserved second.

“And I am?” Her
voice was small.

“You know you
are.” My lips hovered on her neck. I wanted nothing more than to suck the skin
there. To taste her, properly.

“But?”

“But we can’t be
together.”

Lo’s whole
demeaner changed. She nodded stiffly, yanking free of my hold, but I was
stronger. My arms looped around her waist drawing me back in. And then I was
kissing her.

She must have felt
the shift the second our lips met because her hands slid around my shoulders
and she clung onto me like I was her air.

“I’ve wanted you
since that first day in the kitchen,” I murmured into her mouth.

“Oh God,” she breathed
out as my hand skimmed down her legs, trailing around to the apex of her bare
thighs, dancing over the thin cotton material. Her body tensed as if she was
having second thoughts. But nothing about this was wrong. It was too easy. Too
fucking perfect.

“Stop thinking,
London.” I traced a path down her jaw and neck. Biting. Sucking. Teasing. While
my thumb rubbed lazy circles over her warm center and my dick strained against
my sweat pants. “One night. Give me one night.”

I wanted so much
more but she couldn’t know that. She could never know that. And I didn’t want
to think about tomorrow or the day after or next year. I just wanted this.
Here. Now.

Lo clung tighter,
and I responded. In one swift movement, I slid off the stool and picked her up,
crushing our bodies together. Eyes locked on hers, I walked us into the
bedroom.

This was
happening.

And I was going to
imprint every kiss, every touch, every moan to memory. Because whether she
realized it or not, Lo made things easier. Just being in the same room as her,
calmed me. I couldn’t explain it and I didn’t understand it but we were
connected. And if this was all I could have with her, I intended on making the
most of it.

Consequences be
damned.

Prologue

The first time I met Heathan James he was picking the wings off a butterfly. When I asked him why, he turned his light gray eyes my way and said, “Because I want to watch it die.”
I watched as his gaze rolled back to the squirming wingless insect in his hand. Watched his lips part as the sad creature withered and died in his palm. A long, soft breath escaped his parted lips, and a victorious smile tugged on his mouth.
I once heard of the theory that the simple flutter of a butterfly’s wings, a tiny perturbation, that merest whisper of movement in the air, could start the process of building something much bigger; a tornado, devastating thousands. A tsunami crushing iron-heavy waves onto sandy shores, obliterating everything in its path.
As I looked back on the moment we met, this introduction to Heathan James, the man who became my entire world, the pulsing marrow in my bones, I wondered if his deadly act of ripping the wings from the bright blue-and-black butterfly started such a perturbation in our lives. Not a tsunami or a tornado caused by a simple flutter, but something much darker and more sinister, caused by stripping a beautiful creature of its ability to fly, to thrive. A path of destruction no one saw coming; the sweetest, most violent deaths carried out with the gentlest of smiles on our faces and the utmost hell in our hearts.
Heathan James was never the light in my life, but instead a heavy eclipse, blotting out the sun and anything bright, bringing with him endless, eternal night and murderous tar-black blood pumping through my veins.
Heathan James was the genesis of my soul’s reawakening . . . a soul not meant for peace, but one handcrafted for death and murder and blood and bones . . .
Soulmates forged in fire, under the watchful gaze of Satan’s mocking eyes.
Heathan.
Ellis.
Just a couple of sick fux . . .

Ron
I’m a decorated Marine general who doesn’t have time for relationships. I’ve tried –they just don’t work out—and I’ve never lost sleep over it. Then I meet her. Cover Reveal & Giveaway! Reservations by Kindle Alexander

Title: Reservations
Author: Kindle Alexander
Genre: M/M Romance
Release Date: Coming Soon

Wildly successful entrepreneur, Thane Walker is stubbornly set in his ways. Adamantly resistant to the shackles of commitment, he’s seen enough unhappy endings to learn the best way to play is by keeping his men on the payroll.

Levi Silva’s dream of graduating from one of the country’s top medical schools is in his grasp, until news from home changes everything. Now, he’s raising his two teenage brothers and trying to keep everyone’s head above water, emotionally and financially.
When Levi’s new job puts him in Thane’s path, their chemistry explodes, but their fear of being involved in relationships keeps them apart. Unfortunately, despite the intense desire drawing them together, neither man can move forward until they get past their own…Reservations.

His mouth watered thinking about that vinegar coleslaw, and his stomach growled a little louder. Damn, he was starving. He should go out there and fix himself a plate, but he wouldn’t. That would only open a line of personal communication, and this restaurant had too much of that going on. Everyone but the customers were friends.
Instead of doing that, Thane buckled down and opened an email from Arik Layne. The email was to both him and Chef Ferico. The subject line read, “Whole Foods and HSN, Bitches!!!!” That instantly had Thane smiling. Arik had become a force in his life. The guy didn’t seem to understand the value of hesitancy. Arik was a mover and shaker. Their joint venture of infused olive oils had taken off like lightning. Arik had secured sales on thousands of bottles before manufacturing had started. Now that they had production underway, they were blowing and going like wildfire. All Arik had to do was pick up the phone, and he secured another sale.

Thane scanned the message, reading how Whole Foods planned to add them in a test market now, with mass distribution the beginning of October. That was all great news. Arik had also secured a spot on HSN in November, about two weeks before Thanksgiving. Somehow he’d managed to squeeze them into an already set schedule on foods for the holidays. They’d also be given time on the sales floor. The anticipated sales were around twenty-five thousand bottles.

Wow. Okay.

The last lines on the email made Thane squelch the urge to laugh out loud, not wanting to undermine the stern tone he’d taken with his staff, but, man, Arik was hilarious. He listed ten reasons why he’d be a better choice than Thane to go on the HSN broadcast with Chef Ferico. Every single bullet point ended with “because I really want to sample all the foods made that day.”
Literally, a man after his own heart.
Out of nothing more than the need to make Arik squirm, he decided to tease him. Thane quickly typed how glad he was for Arik’s effort, along with a note that they should at least flip a coin for the TV slot. He chose tails. Grinning, he pushed send as his cell phone began to vibrate in his pocket. With a glance at the screen, he saw Julian’s name and swiped to accept the call.
“Hey,” he said, putting the call on speaker before fishing his Bluetooth out of the computer bag and hooking it around his ear.
“Hey, yourself. You still coming here?”
“I am. It’ll be a few weeks though. Everything okay?”

“Of course, you know I run a tight ship, but I might have to break protocol.”
Thane began shaking his head no as if Julian could see him.

“I can almost hear you shaking your head no.”

“That’s because that’s what I’m doing. Absolutely no rule breakage, Julian. You do it one time and that opens the door…”

“Hang tight, Papi Chulo. Don’t get all bent. I’m telling you before I do it. That should count.”

The happy place he’d found after reading Arik’s hilarious message was on the fast track to crashing and burning as Thane sat back in his chair and crossed his arms over his chest.

“Why?” he asked, instead of giving Julian the same dressing-down he’d just given this management team on the failures of flouting established protocol.

“Remember that kid I told you about months ago. My PT assistant, the one who got me into free counseling?”

Thane had to really think which was kind of funny. Julian’s care had been grossly expensive. He’d have thought he’d remember someone who’d saved him so much money in free counseling. He shrugged, lifting his brows, giving himself a break. He could vaguely recall the key components. “Maybe…”

“He needs a job.”
“We don’t hire our staff like that, Julian. Remember your training. Your guys…”

“Boss, slow your roll. He’s a med student taking care of his family, and he’s hot as hell. His body alone’ll make the customers very happy. Happy customers equal more money.”
“Is he in your previous line of work?” Thane asked, completely confused and trying to catch up.

“No. I want him for waitstaff at the club. I saw him last night, and he’s losing his job. He’s coming to the club tonight to take a look around. I’ll send his info off for a background check, but I’ll probably put him on the floor as early as tomorrow,” Julian stated matter-of-factly.

That was another huge issue he was having with Julian. The guy was a beast at work. He kept sticking his nose in every other manager’s responsibilities, causing all sorts of ill will. Julian was a man on a mission. He governed that club with an iron fist, all to try and repay Thane for the expensive care. “Have you talked with Dave about whether he needs more waitstaff?”

“Dave-the-douchebag quit today. You didn’t hear?” Julian said casually.
“What?” Thane pushed his fingers through his hair. Why was he just now hearing about this?

“Don’t worry. I got this. I’ll fill in until you figure out what to do. I, of course, think you just need to let me handle all personnel…”

“Stop, Julian. First, no one’s hired without passing a background check. I’m not watching anyone go through what you did again. And second, you better stop pissing off all my people. Until I talk to Dave and see if I can get him back, you can handle the waitstaff scheduling, but you aren’t…”
“Equipped to handle personnel issues,” Julian said, finishing his sentence. “Are you getting laid regularly? Because I’m pretty sure you’re not. You need to come on over here and bend me over this desk—”

“We have rules. I’m not having sex on that property, and I better not catch you having sex on that property!” Thane shot out, cutting Julian off.

“You’re a very difficult man, Thane Walker,” Julian replied, not missing a beat. “I’d say hard, but I have no way of truly knowing that.”

Best Selling Author Kindle Alexander is an innovative writer, and a genre-crosser who writes classic fantasy, romance, suspense, and erotica in both the male/male and male/female genres. It’s always a surprise to see what’s coming next!

I live in the suburbs of Dallas where it’s true, the only thing bigger than an over active imagination, may be women’s hair!
Usually, I try for funny. Humor is a major part of my life – I love to laugh, and it seems to be the thing I do in most situations – regardless of the situation, but jokes are a tricky deal… I don’t want to offend anyone and jokes tend to offend. So instead I’m going to tell you about Kindle.

I tragically lost my sixteen year old daughter to a drunk driver. She had just been at home, it was early in the night and I heard the accident happen. I’ll never forget that moment. The sirens were immediate and something inside me just knew. I left my house, drove straight to the accident on nothing more than instinct. I got to be there when my little girl died – weirdly, I consider that a true gift from above. She didn’t have to be alone.

That time in my life was terrible. It’s everything you think it would be times about a billion. I love that kid. I loved being her mother and I loved watching her grow into this incredibly beautiful person, both inside and out. She was such a gift to me. To have it all ripped away so suddenly broke me.

Her name was Kindle. Honest to goodness – it was her name and she died a few weeks before Amazon released their brand new Kindle ereader. She had no idea it was coming out and she would have finally gotten her name on something! Try finding a ruler with the name Kindle on it.. It never happened.

Through the course of that crippling event I was lucky enough to begin to write with a dear friend in the fan fiction world of Facebook. She got me through those dark days with her unwavering support and friendship. There wasn’t a time she wasn’t there for me. Sometimes together and sometimes by myself, we built a world where Kindle lives and stands for peace, love and harmony. It’s its own kind of support group. I know without question I wouldn’t be here today without her.

HE was the chief’s cousin…
Namoriee knew the only way to protect herself against the blond-haired gentle giant was to stay away. The way her heart pounded and her insides fluttered when he was near could only lead to disaster.
Two years ago he made a promise to her that she never thought he intended to keep.
She was wrong.
SHE was the handmaiden…
Tyronian wanted Namoriee even when he knew he couldn’t have her. The need to possess her was so deep, it took every ounce of mental and physical strength he had to keep the promise he made to her that stormy night.
He promised he would wait until she was older.
He promised her two years.
But now… time’s up.
Namoriee wants nothing to do with him but he has no plans on stopping until she’s in his bed, and he’s in her heart.
She will be his. Forever.
Whether she likes it or not.

“Tyronian w-w-what are you doing here?”

Tyronian almost smiled at the stutter, a sure sign that she was unnerved, if it wasn’t the fact that she was about to get ready to sleep here—alone—instead of with him in their hut.

“Funny,” he said, closing the door behind him. “I was just going to ask you the same. Care to enlighten me?” He looked down at her when he came to a stop in front of her. Namoriee licked her lips nervously, an action that made his cock twitch to life.

The things he could make her do with those lips…

“I-I was j-just…” Her breath faltered out of her when he pulled her closer to him. His nose nuzzling the top of her head and breathing in the scent of her.

“You were just…what?” he prompted, enjoying how his proximity affected her.

“Aggod is sick so I j-j-just thought that I’d—”

“You just thought that you would avoid me by hiding out here, instead of coming to bed with your husband?”

Her silence told him that he was right.

“You can’t escape me, Namoriee. No matter how hard you try. If you run, I’ll catch you. If you hide, I’ll find you.” His hands traveled down the length of her, relishing in the tremble he felt at his touch.

She gave the slightest moan at the sensation, so quiet, he wouldn’t have heard it if he didn’t have his lips against her throat. Her skin tasted salty, and sweet.

It was addicting.

He gripped her hips, pulling her close enough that she could feel the bulge in his pants. His body’s natural response to her presence.

“Yo

u’ll find that the man I was with you before is gone. He would have let you try and avoid him, and not done anything about it. He was a man who wanted someone bad enough that he was willing to wait for her to grow up…that man is dead.”

“D-d-dead?” Her voice was positively breathy. He nipped the juncture of her neck and shoulder.

“Dead.”

“What man am I looking at now, then?” Shivering when his tongue apologized for the nip against her caramel flesh. He pulled back and smiled—but it wasn’t a smile.

It was primitive, possessive, and completely venereal.

“One that has been starving for two winters, which is a lot of time to figure out exactly what he’ll do once he has the woman he’s wanted. And believe me, she’ll get just as much pleasure out of the experience as he will.”

Nicole René is a San Diego native living with her grumpy kitty, Sebastian and her crazy cute Boxer, Walter.
When she’s not busy creating sexy alpha males, you can most likely find her with her nose stuck in a book reading OTHER sexy alpha males, kicking back with her friends and family, at the movies, or further fueling her “The Little Mermaid” and “The Lord of the Rings” obsession.
She is a certified klutz, often tripping over invisible objects, dropping things like they were hot, and playing ping-pong with the walls. She has lots of tattoos, loves to eat sushi—but hates eating cooked fish, hates going to the beach (even though she’s surrounded by them), and is still waiting for her Hogwarts letter to come in the mail.

But the fiasco pushes her to pursue a career inspired by her late father’s love of wine: sommelier.

Unfortunately, she’s competing against her infuriating one-night stand, a man as intoxicating as a Pinot Noir.

Two years ago, Jimmy was set to inherit his family winery. Then it got ripped from his grasp. To close that dark chapter of his life, he plans to win a local sommelier contest and use the press to expose his family’s tainted wines.

Jimmy loves studying the streaks of alcohol that cling to a wineglass, known as the wine’s “legs,” but other shapely legs are stealing his focus. Tantalizing legs. Legs that had wrapped around his waist for one wild night. Jimmy, sadly, has a weakness for legs.

He also hates to lose.

Rachel settled onto the stool beside me, her spine ramrod straight. She tucked her elbows to her sides. Not exactly relaxed.

A drink could help. “What’s your poison?”

“Apparently dangerous men I don’t know, but I’ll have a glass of the Lynmar Pinot.”

I could do dangerous. “If I’m your poison after two minutes, imagine how you’ll feel in a few hours.” That earned me a long swallow from her. “She’ll have the Foursight,” I added to Cameron. It was sweet how confident she was ordering that wine, but her lips would taste so much better after a sip from my glass.

She shot me a look, her freckles sharp against her reddening cheeks. “Pretty sure I can order for myself, and I’d like the Lynmar.”

“You don’t want the Lynmar. 2011 was a brutal year. Trust me.” No need to bore her about the early rains that season and the lack of fruit.

“Actually I do want the Lynmar.”

Cameron moved to grab the bottle, but I held up my hand. He halted.

To her, I said, “I’ve been sipping the Foursight since I got here. You telling me you don’t want a taste?”

Her attention dropped to my lips again, and she grazed her teeth over hers. Fire sparked in her brown eyes. “I may want a taste of that wine. Later. For now I want the Lynmar.”

“It’s inferior.”

“It’s splendid.”

“The season was crap.”

“The season was hard, not crap.”

“The Foursight is a sure thing,” I said. She must have seen the heat in my gaze.

“I like the underdog,” she countered, a sultry note to her voice. “Finding a diamond in the rough. The vines that survived 2011 were stronger, and a few vintages shone. Like the Lynmar. Hints of spice. Creamy mouthfeel.” A quiet hum passed her lips.

Okay. The girl knew her wine, and my attraction to her spiked. With the haunts I’d been frequenting, and my bartending gig at Rudy’s Tavern, I hadn’t been around a woman like her in ages. No visible ink, her outfit more conservative than racy. Her straight brown hair would look sexy as hell tangled in my fist. “You sure you don’t want to skip to the mouthfeel part?”

She smiled freely, the first hint of her letting loose. “I’m still not sure how bitter the aftertaste will be.”

My answering grin was just as carefree. “I know how to make it sweet, Sunshine.”

She barely reacted, but her nostrils flared. “Then get me a glass of the Lynmar.”

“You’ll regret it.”

“I’m already regretting walking in here.”

I chuckled, unsure the last time flirting had been this much fun. “How about a bet?”

“I don’t bet with strangers.”

“But you have drinks with them?”

She paused. “What sort of bet?”

Between her rejection at Vesper and her stiff posture now, sitting beside me was probably pushing her beyond her limits. Limits I wanted to test. The women I’d messed around with weren’t tough to reel in. We were always after the same thing: a fun night between the sheets. The girl at my side was tipsy, but not so drunk she didn’t know what she was after. Something told me if I could unlace her, it would be lightyears beyond fun.

“You do a blind tasting of the Foursight and the Lynmar,” I said. “If you can’t tell them apart, then I buy you a glass of my choosing, and I get to taste it on your lips. At my place.”

“That escalated fast.” So did her breathing.

“Did you want this to go slow?”

Instead of turning me down, she said, “If I win…if I guess each wine, what do I get?”

“You tell me.”

“A winery?”

I barked out a laugh, but there was nothing funny about her joke. Two years ago, I’d have been able to ante up. “Might be out of my budget. Anything else?”

She looked at me through lowered lashes. “My place.”

Now we were getting somewhere.

Elizabeth Roderick
ELIZABETH RODERICK grew up as a barefoot ruffian on a fruit orchard near Yakima, in the eastern part of Washington State. After weathering the grunge revolution and devolution in Olympia, Washington, Portland, Oregon and Seattle, she recently moved to a small cluster of houses amidst the vineyards of California’s Central Coast.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in Spanish from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, and worked for many years as a paralegal and translator. She is a musician and songwriter, and has played in many bands, rocking some instruments she doesn’t even know the real names for, but mostly guitar, bass and keyboards.
Elizabeth writes novels for young adults and adults; short stories; and memoir which is way more interesting than it should be. Her stories are about love, death, gang warfare, and madness; her characters tend to be of the type that society generally shuns: addicts, convicts, and the mentally ill. She believes if people get to know these characters in stories and in real life, they’ll find them more likeable than they originally thought.
She applies Hunter S. Thompson’s Gonzo method to fiction writing. It often gets a little heavier than what she had in mind, but she chalks it up to forced consciousness expansion.

Heat consumed him as he walked into the hut. Connor had been sweating all day from the relentless sun beating down on the unsubstantial roof. As it was only June, the worst was yet to come. In December, the opposite happened, and it was cold here. The conditions in medical outposts kept getting worse with the constant bombings. And even though he’d been in Syria six months, he still wasn’t used to how the weather drained him or chilled him depending on the season. Five boys sat on a cot next to each other in the exam room to greet him in this tiny village on the outskirts of Aleppo. “As-salāmu ʿalaykum.” The children responded in kind.

He picked up one boy’s arm and winced. The angry sores oozed with pus. He pointed to the boy’s wound area and the other four boys lifted arms affected by the same rash. He could tell this wasn’t poison ivy, impetigo, fungus or shingles. What the hell was it?

“Bug bites.” The words came from behind him. He turned to see a vision amidst all the squalor and sickness. Black as night hair, pulled back in thick knots. Raven brows arching over huge nearly black eyes. “I said those are bug bites. I had a rash of them, pardon the pun, on the Eastern side of the city.”

“Ah. Thanks.”

“A salve of…” She went on to give him the ingredients but he was distracted by her husky voice. “Doctor, are you listening to me?”

“Um, no. Who are you?”

“Calla Gentileschi. Dr. Calla Gentileschi. I’ve been transferred to your area.”

“How do you pronounce your last name again?”

“In Italian, it’s Gen-tee-less-ski. But most Americans use till for the second syllable.” She smiled. “We’re from a sovereign state off the coast of Italy.”

“You don’t have an accent.”

“Our schools teach English in addition to Italian.”

“And you came to this village to help out?”

“Yes. You lost some personnel this week, I understand.”

“We did.” They’d put in their time for the grueling work. Connor himself had signed on for a year.

She said, “I brought my translator, too.”

“Oh, thank God. I’m drowning here. And not being able to communicate is part of the reason.”

“His name is Razim. He’ll be right in…oh, here he is.”

A tall, skinny Arab man walked up to her. Razim had dark hair like the beautiful doctor and sported even darker eyes. He said to her, “I cannot find the supervisor.” His English was accented but perfect.

She smiled at the young man and he smiled back. “Razim, this is Doctor…what’s your name?”

“Marino.” Connor held out his hand. “Connor Marino.”

“Nice to meet you.”

“Supervisor’s here,” someone called from outside.

“I will be right back.” This from Razim before he left them.

“Where are your supplies?” Dr. Gentileschi asked. “I’ll make the salve for you. I’m assuming you’re equipped like we were and have the materials on hand.”

“We got restocked yesterday. We were lucky the planes got in.” He couldn’t help but grin at her. “But I should learn, so come on, I’ll show you where the room is.”

He yelled to a nurse across the way. “Could you keep an eye on these guys while I make a lotion?”

The nurse stepped to the tables.

He led Dr. Gentileschi to the back and unlocked the storage room, which was the size of his walk-in closet back home. It held medical devices, drugs, vaccines, and even condoms to distribute to the men here.

The door slammed behind them.

Connor grabbed onto the woman.

The room shook!

Again. And again.

She clutched at him.

Silence.

A cacophony of noise exploded.

They both startled.

It lasted only about a minute. Dirt and concrete rained down on them. She sneezed and Connor coughed.

She looked at him. “An attack, right?”

“Yes.”

“Oh, no. Razim is out there.”

Connor whipped open the door and they both raced through it. Shambles. Noise from around them: some shouts, some crying, some low and mournful moans spreading over the whole compound. The concrete and dirt had formed a small hill separating them from the treatment area. Connor leaned down. “The debris is hot. Be careful.” He took her hand as they climbed over it, only to find nails and glass and other rubble.

“Those were barrel bombs,” she said as she went with him.

They finally got back to the examining area.

Callandra Gentileschi gasped.

He murmured, “Dear Lord in heaven.”

She grabbed onto his shoulder and buried her face in his back. He couldn’t witness the ravaged bodies of five boys and the nurse for long, either. Turning, he took her into his arms, felt her grasp his shirt and bury herself in his chest. Connor shut his eyes, closing out the misery.
